Following the national assembly’s resolution to remove President Andry Rajoelina from office, an elite military unit that supported youth-led anti-government street rallies in Madagascar announced on Tuesday that it has taken control of the country.
After protests began on September 25 and gained the support of the CAPSAT military unit over the weekend, Rajoelina, who was purportedly out of the country and in hiding, ignored mounting calls to resign.

Anger about water and electricity shortages sparked the youth-led rallies, which later turned into protests against the government and the ruling class. Rajoelina stated in a national speech late on Monday that he was in a “safe place to protect my life” but did not specify where he was, following allegations that he had fled the country with French help.
Declaring that he was on a mission to find solutions” to the political turmoil and that he would not allow the poor Indian Ocean nation to “destroy itself,” the 51-year-old made it clear that he would not resign.
