Citing national security concerns, several well-known Indian universities have halted their academic Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Turkish schools.
Jamia Millia Islamia is the most recent to take action, saying on Thursday that any Memorandums of Understanding with any organisation connected to the Government of the Republic of Turkiye will be immediately suspended.
Any Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and any institution affiliated with the Government of the Republic of Turkiye stands suspended with immediate effect, until further orders,” the university stated in a post on X due to national security concerns. The nation has the unwavering support of Jamia Millia Islamia. The action follows the suspension of Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) own Memorandum of Understanding with Inonu University in Turkey.
The agreement was inked on February 3 of this year to encourage student exchanges and cooperative research. However, in its own statement, JNU echoed similar national security concerns: “The Memorandum of Understanding between JNU and Inonu University, Turkiye, is suspended until further notice due to national security reasons. JNU supports the country.
With immediate effect, the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) in Hyderabad has likewise withdrawn its academic memorandum of understanding with the Yunus Emre Institute in Turkey, contributing to the wave of academic disengagement.
