In a blog post on Saturday, Amazon said that it will invest A$20 billion ($12.97 billion) between 2025 and 2029 to grow, run, and maintain its data centre infrastructure in Australia, enhancing the country’s artificial intelligence capabilities.
The money will go towards more server capacity and support for generative AI workloads, making the investment Amazon’s largest worldwide technology commitment in Australia. Additionally, the business plans to purchase a total of over 170 megawatts of capacity across three additional solar farms in Victoria and Queensland, it said.
In a social media post on X, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated, “Amazon Web Services’ $20 billion investment in data centres in Australia will set us up for the future, boosting our economy and productivity.” This shows a great deal of faith in the Australian economy,” he continued.
Major IT businesses worldwide are developing their infrastructure to meet the quickly increasing demand for cloud computing and generative AI. Companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google have been increasing their expenditures on data centres to gain market share and satisfy the demands of the AI workload.
In addition to the billions of dollars the internet giant has already committed to developing artificial intelligence, Amazon revealed plans on Monday to invest at least $20 billion in Pennsylvania to expand data centre infrastructure.
