Pope Leo XIV Travels to Lebanon With a Message of Peace for a Country in Peril

Pope Leo XIV came in Lebanon on Sunday with a message of peace for the troubled country, which is still dealing with the aftermath of the war between Israel and Hezbollah. The pope had already been to Turkey, where he began his first international tour following his election as the leader of the 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide in May. The tour to the two nations had “a special theme of… being a messenger of peace, of wanting to promote peace throughout the region,” he told reporters on the aircraft.

President Joseph Aoun, the sole Christian head of state in the Arab world, was among the authorities who greeted Leo in Beirut. Leo was welcomed at the airport by kids and a brass band while ships at the harbor blew their horns. Lebanon also presented him with a red carpet and a 21-gun salute.

We adore the pope, who is not only for Christians but also for Muslims,” she told AFP. “We want him to bless our land; we wish he could visit the South. For the first American pope, whose modest demeanor contrasts with that of his dynamic and impetuous predecessor, Francis, the two-nation journey is somewhat of a test.
