New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has revealed an all-female transition team as he gets ready to assume office on January 1, 2026. Speaking at a press conference in Queens, Mamdani emphasized the goal of building a city hall capable of fulfilling his campaign promises, prioritizing both competence and compassion. He highlighted the importance of integrity and working as hard as New Yorkers themselves.
Mamdani will make history as the city’s first Muslim mayor, the youngest in over a century, the first from South Asian heritage, and the first born in Africa. He stressed the urgency of preparation, noting there are 57 days left before his administration starts.
Leading the transition, political consultant Elana Leopold will serve as executive director. The team’s co-chairs include notable figures such as former first deputy mayor Maria Torres-Springer, ex-Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan, United Way of New York City CEO Grace Bonilla, and former deputy mayor Melanie Hartzog. Mamdani remarked that while some team members might be familiar, all share a dedication to innovative problem-solving.
On the campaign front, Mamdani expressed confidence in delivering major policies like a rent freeze, free bus service, universal childcare, and city-run grocery stores funded by taxes on corporations and the wealthy. He also called for support from working people to finance his transition.
