A day after the United States declared that plans for a second summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on the crisis in Ukraine would be postponed, Russia said on Wednesday that it had carried out a significant nuclear weapons training exercise.
Russia claimed to have launched missiles from aircraft, submarines, and land launchers, including intercontinental ballistic weapons that could have hit the US. Russia’s defense ministry reported that its long-range Tu-22M3 strategic bombers flew over the Baltic Sea in a further display of power, accompanied at different times by fighter jets from other nations, most likely NATO.
As European governments take action to strengthen Kyiv’s defences in a conflict, Sweden announced on Wednesday that it had signed a letter of intent to supply Ukraine with Gripen fighter jets. The Gripen, a tough and reasonably priced alternative to aircraft like the US F-35, has been tested by Ukrainian pilots in Sweden.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated during a visit to Swedish defense maker Saab that Kyiv anticipated to acquire at least 100 Gripens and hoped to receive and begin utilizing them next year. As new uncertainty surrounded the US-led peace attempt, Russia and Ukraine bombarded one other with intense missile attacks during the night.
