On Thursday morning, His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah and a member of the Supreme Council, visited the building of the Portuguese National Archives in Lisbon. Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, the Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, was with him.
Ahmed Abdulrahman Al Mahmoud, the UAE’s ambassador to the Portuguese Republic, Ahmed Bin Rakkad Al Ameri, the CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority, Mohamed Hassan Khalaf, the Director General of the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, Luís Filipe, the Director General of the Portuguese National Archives, and a number of Emirati and Portuguese officials and media representatives were there to greet His Highness when he arrived.
The Ruler of Sharjah gave a speech in which he talked about how happy he was to visit the Portuguese National Archives. He remembered going in 1982 and how he was still working to acquire vital Portuguese records. His Highness has thousands of these kinds of documents. He used them to write his book The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman—Annals of History (1497 CE–1757 CE), which has 21 volumes.
His Highness also said that he is currently working on releasing The Portuguese in the Indian Ocean, which would be a 25-volume set about the history of the Portuguese in India, East Africa, and several Asian countries.
