New Partnership’ With the United States is Being Sought by Europe at the Security Gathering

While he was rallying officials at a major security conference on Friday, German leader Friedrich Merz called for “a new transatlantic partnership” between the United States and Europe. This came at a time when the United States President Donald Trump was exerting a great deal of pressure on Germany.

In the midst of what Merz and others have referred to as a period of “upheaval,” European leaders were making efforts to bolster their relations with the United States government. They insisted that they were upgrading their defences in accordance with presidential demands.

The Munich Security Conference of this year takes place at a time when relations between the United States and Europe are strained. This is due to the fact that President Trump has threatened to take control of Greenland and has condemned the record of European countries over immigration.

Alongside the attempts of European NATO countries to raise their defence spending out of concern that Moscow could seek to expand into their territory, the war that Russia is waging against Ukraine, which is about to reach its fifth year this month, will be something that will be at the forefront of everything that will be discussed.

At the event, European leaders reaffirmed their security obligations and the NATO alliance. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen stated that the bloc was “ready to take more responsibility for our own security.”
