The Chronology of Water, Hollywood actress Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut, received a four-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. One of the highlights of Stewart’s adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s 2011 memoir was undoubtedly Imogen Poots’ performance. Poots plays Yuknavitch in Stewart’s non-linear adaptation of the best-selling author’s biography, which contrasts her poetic redemption in the water with graphic flashbacks of her father abusing her physically and her descent into drug usage.
Stewart spotlighted the actors and crew by giving them all hugs. She kissed her wife, Dylan Meyer, then let the limelight shine on her by taking the microphone from Thierry Fremaux, the head of Cannes, to give a brief remark. Being here and seeing this with all of you is a really crazy, strange experience. The movie isn’t even completed yet; we just finished it about five minutes ago. Stewart exclaimed to Fremaux, “We just slipped under this fucking shut door and goddamn it, thank you,” and then he sprang into his arms.
In the festival’s Un Certain Regard sidebar, which this year also includes debuts by other stars including Scarlett Johansson and Harris Dickinson, the long-in-the-making passion project finally made its debut. Variety.com states that Stewart co-wrote the screenplay for the movie with Andy Mingo, Yuknavitch’s spouse, in addition to directing it.
