The old world order is gone, and it will probably not come back, so we have to build something new and it has to be a world order that is built on the values that we represent the leaders standing in front of you today,” said Mette Frederiksen, the prime minister of Denmark.
We have had totally unacceptable pressure from the US and the US president,” Frederiksen stated. It has been extremely challenging for the people of Greenland to go through this, and one of the reasons we have been able to stand firmly on very common values namely, the need to respect sovereign states and the right of a people to self-determination—is because of our close friends.
By opposing US President Donald Trump on Greenland, Frederiksen has bet her leadership. It is becoming more difficult to persuade domestic voters to grant her a third term. She is wagering that her stubborn stance on the Arctic island will dispel rising concerns that she has given Denmark’s cost-of-living crisis enough attention before the general election on March 24.
Frederiksen, whose Social Democrats lost a historic municipal election in November of last year, has experienced a comeback this year that, should she serve another full term, might make her Denmark’s longest-serving leader since World War Two.
