The Tiniest Snake in the World Makes a Huge Return

A snake so small it could be mistaken for a worm has been rediscovered in Barbados, nearly two decades after scientists feared it had vanished. The Barbados threadsnake (Tetracheilostoma carlae), considered the smallest snake species in the world, was spotted during an ecological survey in March. The discovery was made by the Barbados Ministry of the Environment in collaboration with the Conservation Group, during a field study in the central part of the island.

The snake, just 8 to 10 centimeters (around 3 to 4 inches) long when fully grown, can almost fit on a U.S. quarter. Marked by orange stripes along its back, small eyes on the sides of its head, and a distinct scale on its snout, it had not been officially seen in nearly 20 years — and only a few confirmed sightings exist since 1889.

Justin Springer, who found the snake alongside fellow researcher Blades, described the moment of discovery as surreal. “When you’re used to looking and not finding anything, it’s a shock when it finally appears,” he said. “You don’t want to get your hopes too high.
