The United Nations on Wednesday condemned the latest Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, calling the rising civilian death toll “appalling” and urging both sides not to let the chance for peace “slip away.” Israel said it launched strikes on multiple Hamas targets after one of its soldiers was killed, marking Gaza’s deadliest night since the US-brokered truce earlier in October.
UN human rights chief Volker Turk reported that the attacks had struck schools, homes, and shelters for displaced people inside the Gaza Strip. “Reports that more than 100 Palestinians died overnight in airstrikes targeting residential areas and shelters are deeply alarming,” Turk said, stressing that international law demands the protection of civilians.
He emphasized that Israel must uphold its responsibilities under humanitarian law and could be held accountable for violations. It is heartbreaking that these deaths occurred just as Gaza’s people were starting to regain a little hope after years of relentless violence,” Turk added.
Calling for both sides to fully respect the ceasefire, Turk urged influential nations to use their power to ensure peace efforts continue. The people of Gaza have endured unimaginable suffering,” he said.
