The US Vetoes the UN Security Council’s Proposal For a Ceasefire in Gaza Once More

The United States protected its partner Israel from significant diplomatic pressure on Thursday by using its veto once more to block a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution, which was introduced in August in reaction to the UN’s formal declaration of famine following Israel’s war on Hamas in the Palestinian territories for almost two years, was supported by the other 14 members of the Council.
The vote took place as Palestinians fled southward as Israeli tanks and jets bombarded Gaza City, the focus of a significant new ground attack. Both the immediate and unconditional release of hostages and “an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties” were called for in the resolution language that AFP was able to view.
Before the voting, Christina Lassen, Denmark’s UN ambassador, stated, “Let this resolution send a clear message, a message that the Security Council is not turning its back on starving civilians, on the hostages, and on the demand for a ceasefire.
A generation runs the risk of dying of starvation and hopelessness in addition to war. The suffering of people has worsened as a result of Israel’s expansion of its military campaign in Gaza City. This dire circumstance, this humanitarian and human failing, is what has forced us to take action today.
