Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of WHO, told a press briefing conducted online from the UN health agency’s Geneva headquarters that “what’s entering is not enough, so the situation still remains catastrophic. He cautioned that there has been “no dent in hunger, because there is not enough food,” since the US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into force on October 10.
During the conflict, Israel frequently stopped providing aid to the Gaza Strip, worsening the already poor humanitarian situation. According to the UN, this led to starvation in several areas of the Palestinian land.
Richard Peeperkorn, the WHO’s representative in the Palestinian territories, informed reporters that 411 people, including 109 children, have been confirmed to have perished in Gaza as a result of hunger since the beginning of 2025.
The chief of WHO’s humanitarian and disaster action branch, Teresa Zakaria, emphasized that all of these deaths were avoidable. Currently, over 600,000 Gazans are experiencing “catastrophic levels of food insecurity,” she continued. However, Tedros stated that only 200 to 300 trucks were currently entering each day, despite the arrangement mediated by US President Donald Trump that allowed 600 trucks to enter each day.
