Only Chanel would declare its renowned salon on Rue Cambon “too small” before enlarging it and relocating it to a palace. The house transformed intimacy into spectacle for a presentation set amidst nature during Paris Couture Week on Tuesday, marking 110 years of its haute couture and more than a century of Coco Chanel’s groundbreaking innovations in women’s fashion. The atelier was blown up as a large stage within the recently rebuilt Grand Palais.
From the little salons of 1915 to its current behemoth, Chanel, whose creator outlawed corsets and reinterpreted luxury as emancipation, demonstrated the breadth of that heritage. Only a select few luxury behemoths could pull off the flex, and as one front-row visitor noted, it could have been a brilliant diversion while the fashion industry awaited the arrival of Chanel’s new designer, Matthieu Blazy.
Sweating past marble and gold, Penélope Cruz, Naomi Campbell, and the house’s closest VIP circle climbed golden steps to enter the restored atelier. Willo Perron’s set was quintessential Chanel: small yet imposing, traditional yet cutting-edge.
