Following additional shelling of Beirut’s suburbs and Israeli troops attempting to launch fresh ground incursions into southern Lebanon, an Israeli strike struck Tripoli, a city in northern Lebanon, for the first time early on Saturday, according to a Lebanese security source.
The source informed Reuters that the attack on a Palestinian refugee camp near Tripoli claimed the lives of a Hamas official, his wife, and two children. According to media connected to Hamas, a head of the organization’s armed branch was killed in the hit. The Israeli military refrained from commenting on the Tripoli strike right away.
According to three Israeli officials quoted by Axios, Hashem Safieddine, who is thought to be Nasrallah’s successor, was targeted Thursday night in a Beirut underground bunker. However, it was unclear what would happen to him.
After firing at Hizbollah for almost a year, Israel has significantly increased the number of its strikes on Lebanon in recent weeks. The fighting, which has been occurring concurrently with Israel’s one-year-old war against Hamas in Gaza, has mainly been restricted to the Israel-Lebanon border region.
The once-heavy southern neighbourhoods of Beirut, a Hizbollah stronghold, have been under constant Israeli assault. Reuters witnessed at least one explosion after a military spokesman issued three evacuation advisories for the local population overnight.
