Although US President Donald Trump did not explicitly state that he would not run for a third term, he did rule out competing for vice president in the 2028 election on Monday, which fueled rumors that he could try to prolong his tenure.
Throughout his campaign, Trump has teased supporters with “Trump 2028” hats and made jokes about serving longer than the two terms allowed by the constitution. While most constitutional academics reject the idea, certain friends have taken those signals seriously and imply that they are looking into political or legal avenues to make it happen.
Some fans have proposed that Trump may run as vice president in order to get around the ban, while another candidate would run for president but quit, allowing Trump to take over as president once more. Trump told reporters on board Air Force One as he flew from Malaysia to Tokyo on Monday, “I’d be allowed to do that.”
After their visit at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Donald Trump waves to Emperor Naruhito of Japan (not shown) from his presidential vehicle as he leaves. He did, however, add: “I wouldn’t do it. It seems too cute to me. Yes, I would not consider that since it is too adorable. People probably wouldn’t like that. It is far too cute. It wouldn’t be appropriate, so it’s not.
