Trump Says that “Help is On its way After 2,000 People were Killed in Protests in Iran

The death toll from nationwide protests in Iran has crossed 2,000, according to activists, as limited communication was restored and Iranians were able to make calls abroad for the first time in days. Authorities had earlier cut internet and phone services as part of a crackdown on demonstrators.

The US based Human Rights Activists News Agency reported that at least 2,003 people have been killed so far. The figure marks the deadliest wave of unrest in Iran in decades and echoes the violence seen during the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iranian state television indirectly acknowledged the high number of deaths for the first time, quoting an official who said the country had “many martyrs.” The official claimed that authorities delayed releasing figures due to the severe nature of the injuries suffered by victims. The statement came shortly after activists published their own estimates.

The protests began more than two weeks ago over Iran’s worsening economic conditions and quickly turned into demonstrations against the ruling system. Protesters have openly criticised the leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Images from Tehran showed graffiti and chants calling for his death, an act that can carry severe punishment under Iranian law.
