Severe flooding in Tunisia has claimed the lives of four people, according to authorities, as unusually heavy rainfall forced widespread school closures and disrupted daily life across large parts of the country.
All four deaths were reported in the town of Moknine in the Monastir governorate. Civil defence spokesman Khalil Mechri said two people were swept away by floodwaters, while another woman drowned inside her home.
Weather officials described the rainfall as unprecedented. Abderazak Rahal, head of forecasting at Tunisia’s National Institute of Meteorology, said some regions had not experienced such intense rain since 1950. He noted that January rainfall levels were exceptionally high, with Monastir, Nabeul and the Greater Tunis area among the worst affected.
In response to the dangerous conditions, authorities announced the suspension of classes on Wednesday at public and private schools and universities in 15 of Tunisia’s 24 governorates. Flooding also caused major transport disruptions, with roads submerged and vehicles left stranded as fast-moving water surged through streets. Images and videos of the flooding spread rapidly on social media.
