During a meeting in London on Friday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Western allies might do more to support Kyiv’s long-range missile capabilities.
As the conflict moves into its fourth winter, Kyiv’s Western allies have increased pressure on Moscow. This week, the US and EU both announced additional restrictions on Russian energy that are intended to harm its war economy severely.
While they did not approve a massive “reparations loan” backed by frozen Russian assets, EU leaders did take steps to finance Ukraine’s defense for an additional two years. As the Ukrainian president came in Downing Street for the first one-on-one talks, Starmer hugged Zelensky. The London meeting was scheduled to be attended by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof. French President Emmanuel Macron was expected to participate digitally. Before he met with the king, the Ukrainian national song was played at Windsor Castle, which is about a thousand years old and located west of London.
