US Strikes on Iran Spark Outrage from Arab Nations

Arab countries on Sunday strongly condemned the US air strikes on nuclear facilities in Iran, warning of serious repercussions and calling for a return to diplomacy. The United Arab Emirates expressed concern after the attack, calling for “an immediate end to the escalation.

Saudi Arabia expressed “great concern” over the attacks. Gulf countries have been engaged in a diplomatic frenzy for solutions since Israel launched its air campaign on their neighbour Iran on June 13.

Fearing “catastrophic consequences” for the region and the globe, Qatar is home to the largest US military installation in the Middle East. Following the midnight attacks, Yemen’s Houthi rebels repeatedly threatened to attack US warships and boats in the Red Sea, calling them a “war declaration” against the Iranian people. Despite a recent truce negotiated by Oman, the Iran-backed group warned on Saturday to relaunch assaults on US warships and boats in the Red Sea if Washington strikes Iran.

The assaults, according to US President Donald Trump, destroyed Iran’s primary nuclear installations and were a “spectacular military success.” However, his Gulf allies, who are Iran’s neighbours, were calling for a return to negotiations.

Oman, which was facilitating nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran, vehemently denounced the US strikes, asking for a quick deescalation and branding them unlawful. After the escalation, Bahrain, which is home to a significant US naval station, ordered the majority of its government workers to work from home until further notice. Bahrain is home to the Fifth Fleet of the US Navy, which serves the area.
