A 5.2-magnitude earthquake slammed southern China’s Guangxi region on Monday, killing two people and collapsing 13 buildings, according to state media. The earthquake struck Liuzhou, Guangxi, at 12:21 a.m. (1621 GMT), according to the state news agency Xinhua. The US Geological Survey reported a lower magnitude of 5.0.
According to state broadcaster CCTV, the deceased were a couple, a 63-year-old male and a 53-year-old woman.
A 91-year-old man who had gone missing was recovered after search and rescue efforts and taken to the hospital for treatment, according to CCTV.
A video released by the station showed a team of emergency workers transporting the injured man on a stretcher.
According to CCTV, authorities evacuated around 7,000 people from the area. Firefighters stand in front of a collapsed structure after an earthquake in Liunan district, Liuzhou, China’s southern Guangxi region, on Monday.
Other CCTV footage saw people fleeing high-rise buildings and piles of rubble near to wrecked dwellings. Rescue personnel were spotted trekking through the debris, while their canines searched for signs of life.
