Indian Prime Minister Modi Begins Historic Visits to Poland and Ukraine

Premier of India Narendra Modi began his historic tour to Poland and Ukraine on Wednesday. He has committed to pushing for a diplomatic solution to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As India’s first prime minister to visit Ukraine and Poland in forty-five years, Modi is an important bridgehead for foreign leaders visiting Kyiv’s war-torn neighbour.

On Thursday, he is scheduled to meet with President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland, in addition to Indian nationals residing in the nation in Central Europe. After arriving in Warsaw, Modi stated on X that “this visit will add momentum to the India-Poland friendship and benefit the people of our nations.

In order to protect India from its regional rival China, Modi has tread carefully in preserving India’s historically cordial ties with Russia while pursuing stronger security alliances with Western countries.

Instead of outright denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, his government has urged communication between the two parties to settle their differences. We wish for an early restoration of peace and stability in the region as friends and partners,” Modi stated in a statement released on Wednesday prior to his departure for Poland.

Share perspectives on peaceful resolution of the ongoing Ukraine conflict,” the statement continued, was another item on Modi’s agenda for his meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev.
