Malaysia on Monday began enforcing restrictions prohibiting millions of children under the age of 16 from possessing social media accounts, as part of a global campaign to strengthen online safety safeguards for young users.
The guidelines mandate social media platforms to establish age verification methods and prevent individuals under the age of 16 from creating accounts. They apply to platforms with at least eight million users, such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
The government stated that the measures are intended to safeguard youngsters from hazardous information, cyberbullying, and platform features that promote excessive use. Several nations, notably Australia, Brazil, and Indonesia, have implemented or announced age-based limitations and requirements for children’s access to social media, while others are researching or implementing similar measures.
