At least 38 people were killed by a strong magnitude 7.7 earthquake that occurred off the coast of Indonesia early on Saturday. The earthquake caused panic in an area that frequently experiences fatal earthquakes and collapsed homes and buildings. Over a dozen locals were hurt, according to the authorities.
When Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reported that monitoring revealed no appreciable sea-level fluctuations that might endanger coastal populations, authorities removed the tsunami warning and advised coastal residents to seek higher ground.
According to the US Geological Survey, the 10-kilometre-deep earthquake occurred at 5:58 a.m. local time in the Flores region of Indonesia. Its epicentre was located in the East Nusa Tenggara province, 68 kilometres (42 miles) north-northwest of Ende. Many aftershocks followed the first earthquake.
At least 20 bodies have been found in the three damaged regencies of Sikka, West Manggarai, and East Manggarai, according to Fathur Rahman, head of the Maumere Search and Rescue Agency. Eight of the bodies were rescued from a landslide in the Manggarai village of Reok. Six individuals with serious injuries were taken to local hospitals.
