Bangladesh announced on Sunday that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would not travel to India unless Sheik Hasina, the former prime minister of Bangladesh who escaped following an uprising in 2024, was extradited by New Delhi.Since Hasina’s government was overthrown by fatal anti-government demonstrations and she fled to nearby India, where she currently resides, the two nations have had a tense relationship.
After being found guilty of crimes against humanity, she faces the death penalty in Bangladesh, and Dhaka has repeatedly asked for her extradition. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, A.K.M. Shahidul Karim, a foreign ministry representative, downplayed media rumours that Rahman may visit India the following week.
We believe that a favourable setting must be established for the visit,” Karim told reporters. We have thus encouraged the Indian government to move quickly to extradite Sheik Hasina and other wanted individuals.”
Bangladesh’s plea for extradition is “under examination,” according to India. Since taking office in February, Rahman has travelled to China and Malaysia, breaking the custom of Bangladeshi leaders making their first foreign trip to India. Rahman met with Dinesh Trivedi, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, last week, sparking rumours of a potential breakthrough.
