A Burnham representative declined to comment, citing company policy not to discuss “national security matters. Politico originally reported, citing four unidentified officials, that Burnham believed he was messaging with Susie Wiles before becoming suspicious and cutting off connection.
The White House stated that the incident had nothing to do with Wiles’ devices being hacked. Last year, the US authorities examined a series of mails sent to elected officials, business executives, and other notable persons in the United States by someone impersonating Wiles.
Soon after those instances, the State Department issued a warning to US diplomats about attempts to mimic Secretary of State Marco Rubio and possibly other officials using artificial intelligence. The warning came after it was discovered that an impostor posing as Rubio attempted to contact at least three foreign ministers, a US senator, and a governor.
The FBI had warned about “malicious actors” employing AI to impersonate senior US government officials. Burnham, who became prime minister less than a month ago, has attempted to establish positive relations with the White House. Trump warmed up to Burnham’s predecessor, Keir Starmer before turning on him.
