Peter Cullen, a famous voice actor who brought life to numerous TV shows, specials, and films, such as Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh cartoon series and Optimus Prime in the syndicated 1984 series “Transformers,” has passed away. He was eighty-five. Cullen passed away at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, according to his agent, Kevin Motley. According to a family statement, “His family asks that you honour his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty and always remember ‘be strong enough to be gentle.”
Cullen’s career included voice acting in “The Smurfs” and several G.I. Joe incarnations, as well as announcing the ground-breaking comedy and variety show “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” in the late 1960s and participating in comedic routines for Sonny & Cher. But as Optimus Prime, he touched a nerve.
Even though the original animation only ran for a few years, it had a lasting impact on popular culture, as evidenced by the toy line, comics, and spinoff cartoon programs that were created over the following 20 years. This culminated with Michael Bay launching a multibillion-dollar live-action movie series in 2007.
Giving voice to a vehicle didn’t sound all that odd, but Cullen just knew that he would be reading for the part of a truck before his audition. In 2019, Cullen told the AP, “You’re always auditioning for something in animation that’s a little off the norm. Cullen’s older brother, a US Marine in the Vietnam War, sprang to mind when he heard about the valiant Autobot captain who transformed into a red cabover semitrailer.
