New releases suggest a broader format. The gadgets open to a wide viewing area rather than a near-square display to provide you more space for videos, documents and various applications. In the closed position the shorter, wider dimensions look more like a passport than a typical book-style fold.
Huawei took the first step in this direction with their Pura X which was launched in China in March 2025. It joined a portfolio of flip, book-style and tri-fold devices, and brought a passport-style design based on a 6.3-inch inner display with a 16:10 aspect ratio. A 3.5-inch outside screen offered fast access to everything without having to open up the phone.
The Pura X Max, coming to China this April, takes that notion farther with a 7.7-inch inner display, and a larger 5.4-inch exterior screen. The bigger exterior display makes the phone more usable while it’s closed, and opening it gives you more room to see stuff and get work done. Documents can display more information across the page. Videos can take up more space on the screen. But how nicely the broader body fits in the hand is a question of personal preference.
