A US official stated on Tuesday that talks for a ceasefire to end the conflict in Gaza are still ongoing in Qatar, following the conclusion of previous rounds of talks in Cairo amid escalating tensions in the region.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that US President Joe Biden’s Middle East envoy, Brett McGurk, is in Doha for the negotiations intended to end the 10-month war between Israel and Hamas.
Months have passed while the US, Egypt, and Qatar have attempted to broker a deal that would see the release of the remaining hostages in return for an extended cease-fire. The discussions are still going on, but no progress has been made.
According to a US official, President Biden’s top Middle East advisor met with senior Qatari leaders on Tuesday in Doha to discuss the ongoing efforts to finalise an agreement between Israel and Hamas regarding a cease-fire and hostages.
The prime minister travelled to Tehran on Monday to meet with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. On Tuesday, White House Senior Advisor Brett McGurk met with Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Foreign Affairs Minister Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
