Eight Tickets are The Deciding factor in Taylor’s 28-year Pursuit of Cal Ripken’s History

One of baseball’s most iconic records is Cal Ripken Jr.’s 2,632 consecutive games in the Baltimore Orioles’ lineup over 17 seasons. Rick Taylor, a lifelong Orioles fan, has been compiling a collection to duplicate Ripken’s “Iron Man” streak, which spanned from 1982 to 1998. For the past 28 years, he has been trying to collect a ticket from each game of the streak.

Did I ever truly believe that I would reach this point? Taylor, a retired 69-year-old food-industry salesman living outside Baltimore, responded, “Not really.” “Nevertheless, I have consistently maintained that I am capable of achieving single digits if I were to ever experience it.

The physical manifestation of a record that many believe will never be broken, Taylor’s collection now fills 16 boxes in his collectible-filled basement. Each ticket is individually protected in a hard plastic holder and labeled with its corresponding game number. Mike Provenzale, a production manager at Heritage Auctions, which is not associated with Taylor’s collection, stated, “The amount of time and the effort required to put something together like that is astonishing. Ripken’s record is awe-inspiring to all. Compiling a collection of that many tickets is nearly an equal feat of perseverance.
