Due to High Fuel Costs, a US cruise Ship Has to Stop its Global voyage, Leaving 200 Passengers Stranded

Due to high fuel costs, a US cruise ship that called its cabins “floating homes” had to stop its three-year trip in Cambodia, forcing hundreds of passengers to get off the ship. The MV Odyssey set sail two years ago on a trip to all seven continents that was advertized as a way to live at sea for a long time and visit the world. The ship’s owner said, “Make the Odyssey your permanent home.” A suite on the Odyssey could be yours for the life of the ship for as little as $230,000.

It is currently docked at the port of Sihanoukville in Cambodia, which is on the Gulf of Thailand. There is no set date for when it will leave. Cambodian officials say that the ship had 156 crew members and 203 passengers, most of whom were Americans. It can hold up to 650 people.

Due to the war in Iran, Villa Vie Residences, the company that runs it and is based in Florida, said that monthly fuel costs per cabin have reached an estimated $6,000 to $8,000 in some parts of Asia. Those costs used to average $1,800 per cabin. The company said it tried to cut down on fuel use by slowing down the schedule and staying in port longer, but the rising costs made it impossible.
