Two diplomats briefed on the matter say that US officials have told several Middle Eastern countries and regional allies to be ready for possible new military action against Iran after next week’s midterm elections in the US. They have also been told that Iran might try to retaliate against them.
They both spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to talk about the secret warnings that US defence and diplomatic officials had given. The diplomats made it clear that President Trump has not yet made up his mind about whether to launch new attacks against Iran. The president, on the other hand, has said many times that he is thinking about ordering more military action after the important US elections on November 3. The region is on high alert because of these threats and new US calls for allies to get ready for possible retaliation. A return to major operations could be coming soon.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Tehran “continues to give diplomacy a chance to succeed” and is working with mediators to go over ideas that Tehran included in a proposal that was put forward last month but was quickly turned down by Trump. The Iranians still want these ideas to be used as the basis for returning to a ceasefire.
