Sana Yousaf was assassinated Monday night at her home in the capital, Islamabad. She turned 17 last week and had over a million followers on social media.

Such responses give abusers the confidence to “silence women who dare to be visible,” according to women’s rights activist Nighat Dad. She said on social media, “The disgusting remarks made in the wake of Sana’s murder are not merely hate speech; they are a part of a mindset that normalises violence against women in Pakistan.
