Dubai Court orders Automobile Driver, Owner to Jointly pay Dhs1.758m to Insurance Firm

A Dubai Misdemeanors Court sentenced a motorist to one month in jail and fined him Dhs10,000 and suspended his driving license for inflicting significant harm to an Asian national while he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Dubai Civil Court ordered the driver and the car owner to jointly pay Dhs1.75 million back to the insurance company plus 5% legal interest from the date of filing the action until the whole amount is paid back. The Dubai Misdemeanours Court had already convicted the motorist of drunk driving and causing an accident that resulted in serious injuries, case documents said.

He was sentenced to a month in jail, fined Dhs10,000 and his driving licence was suspended for six months. The decision was not appealed and became final.The Insurance Disputes Settlement Committee had ordered the insurance carrier of the vehicle to provide compensation to the victim.

The Court of Appeal further revised the order and raised the compensation to Dhs1,785,000. The Court of Cassation ratified the verdict. As a result, the corporation paid Dhs1,758,602.5 to the aggrieved person in compensation, interest and other fees in accordance with the verdict.
