Slovenia declared a “symbolic measure” on Wednesday to increase diplomatic pressure over the conflict in Gaza: a restriction on the importation of items from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. In an attempt to put an immediate halt to the bloodshed in Gaza, Slovenia’s government, which has regularly criticized Israel over the crisis, took the step last year to recognize a Palestinian state.
The Israeli government admitted in a statement on Wednesday that its actions “represent grave and persistent violations of international humanitarian law. Slovenia stated that it “cannot and must not be part of a chain that enables or overlooks” such breaches, which include “expropriations, the forced evictions of the Palestinian population, and the construction of illegal settlements.”
Thus, the Slovenian government decided to “prohibit the importation of goods that originate from illegal settlements in Israel. A “clear reaction to the Israeli government’s policy, which undermines the possibilities for lasting peace and a two-state solution,” is what its most recent action reflects. Slovenia’s Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon described the restriction as “a necessary response to the ongoing humanitarian and security situation in Gaza, even though it is just symbolic.
