Following a Violent Altercation With Police, the Iraqi prime Minister Dismisses Paramilitary Leaders

Following battles with police at a government site last month that resulted in three fatalities, Iraq’s prime minister authorized broad disciplinary and judicial actions against top leaders in a paramilitary unit, his office announced on Saturday.

On July 27, gunmen stormed the agriculture directorate in the Karkh neighborhood of Baghdad and engaged federal police in combat. Following the removal of the previous directorate head and the appointment of a new one, the raid occurred.

According to a government-commissioned inquiry, the former director, who was involved in corruption charges, had recruited Kataib Hizbollah militia members to carry out the attack, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani’s spokeswoman, Sabah Al-Numan, said in a statement on Saturday.

A commission to look into the incident was established by Al-Sudani, who is also the commander in chief of the armed forces. Kataib Hizbollah is a member of the Popular Mobilization Forces, a group of militias supported by Iran and primarily Shiite that came together to combat the Daesh when it overran the nation more than ten years ago.
