The Two-State Solution Declaration Denouncing Hamas is Unanimously Supported by the UN

Ahead of a gathering of world leaders, the UN General Assembly on Friday passed a resolution defining “tangible, timebound, and irreversible steps” toward a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians. The seven-page proclamation is the outcome of a global conference on the decades-long conflict, held at the UN in July and hosted by Saudi Arabia and France. The event was boycotted by Israel and the United States. A resolution supporting the declaration was approved by 142 votes, rejected by 10, and abstained by 12 nations.

Britain, France, Canada, Australia, and Belgium are expected to formally recognize a Palestinian state at a conference of world leaders on September 22 on the fringes of the high-level UN General Assembly, which precedes the vote. The 193-member General Assembly approved the statement denouncing the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel by Hamas militants, which led to the war in Gaza.

Additionally, it denounces the siege, famine, and Israeli airstrikes on residents and civilian infrastructure in Gaza, “which have resulted in a devastating humanitarian catastrophe and protection crisis.” According to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, the resolution guaranteed Hamas’ international isolation.
