On Sept. 22, An Indian Minister Will Travel to The US for Trade Negotiations

After recent progress in negotiations that resumed last week, India’s Trade Minister Piyush Goyal will travel to Washington on September 22 to expedite talks on a long-pending trade agreement. According to an official statement released on Saturday, “the delegation intends to proceed with the discussions with a view to achieve early conclusion of a mutually beneficial trade agreement.

In New Delhi on September 16, Indian trade officials led by Chief Negotiator Rajesh Agrawal met with a US group led by Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch.

Tuesday’s trade talks with US officials were “positive and forward-looking, according to New Delhi, as US President Donald Trump adopted a more accommodative stance after imposing punitive tariffs on India for its purchases of Russian oil.

However, it was unclear right away if New Delhi would address the Trump administration’s increase in the H1B visa cost, the call to reduce Russian oil purchases, or Washington’s key demand that its dairy and agriculture industries be opened to US businesses. In a move that India claimed would hurt its sizable IT services sector, the Trump administration on Friday issued an executive order requiring businesses to pay a $100,000 annual fee for an H1B visa, which is scheduled to go into effect at midnight on Saturday.
