The $3.45 Billion UN Regular Budget for 2026 is Approved by the General Assembly

After weeks of intense deliberations and UN80, one of the organization’s most significant reform programs, the General Assembly approved a $3.45 billion regular budget for the United Nations for 2026.

The 193-member General Assembly approved the budget on Tuesday, authorizing $3.45 billion for the upcoming year to support the organization’s three main areas of focus: human rights, sustainable development, and peace and security.

UN Controller Chandramouli Ramanathan addressed members as the Assembly’s primary administrative and budgetary body, the Fifth Committee, concluded discussions. He commended the Committee for managing a complex and rushed process to a prompt conclusion.

It has been a difficult year, he added, pointing out that the Secretariat had to put up a complete budget in less than six weeks, create hundreds of tables, and address thousands of inquiries from Member States and monitoring organizations.

He emphasized that the Committee had once again attained unanimity, which is a characteristic of the budgeting process, despite frequently difficult deliberations. He said to the delegates, “That is something remarkable that you should not underestimate.
