Trump’s Megaphone Politics Backfires on Greenland

It is hard to determine for sure why Karoline Leavitt, in her capacity as White House spokesperson and on behalf of Donald Trump, raised the possibility of using military action to seize Greenland, given that she did not know the specifics of their discussions.

But considering the date, it appears to have been a defiant and usually sensitive reaction to the courteous but firm “joint statement” released by the leaders of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom. They affirmed the moral and legal fact that  Greenland belongs to its people. Denmark and Greenland alone have the authority to make decisions about issues pertaining to Denmark and Greenland, according to The Independent.

However, it’s clear that President Trump believes it also affects “national and international security” and the United States. He was obviously annoyed. Naturally, Ms. Leavitt’s statement that utilizing the US military is always an option at the commander-in-chief’s disposal” was somewhat of a cliché. That’s true, yet the head of state has before disregarded the use of force, such as in Canada.

The Greenlanders, Danes, and Europeans have no suitable response to Ms. Leavitt’s clear reference to force. Greenland and most other locations are readily controlled by the United States in terms of power.
