The Diplomacy of Four Arab Countries Stopped the “US-Iran Escalation

According to a Gulf official, four Arab nations engaged in serious diplomacy with the US and Iran this week in an effort to avert a US attack on Iran over Tehran’s use of force against protestors, which they worried would have repercussions throughout the region.

Over 48 hours before US President Donald Trump indicated on Thursday that he had finally decided against a strike for the time being, stating the killings in Iran were abating, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, and Egypt were involved in the negotiations.

The four countries told Washington that any military strike would have serious consequences for the wider region, affecting both security and economic stability, and that these effects would eventually reach the United States as well, according to an official familiar with the matter. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the discussions.

They also warned Iran that any retaliatory move against US facilities in the Gulf would harm Tehran’s relations with other countries in the region. Saudi Arabia’s international media office, along with the foreign ministries of Qatar, Oman and Egypt, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
