A Landslide in Indonesia has Claimed 17 Lives

The death toll from a landslide in Indonesia has risen to 17, disaster officials confirmed on Monday, as rescue efforts continued for a third day. The landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall and struck a village in West Bandung, Java, early Saturday morning, burying homes under mud and debris and forcing dozens of residents to flee.

“The number of fatalities from the West Bandung landslide has reached 17,” said Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, in a statement on Monday. Authorities have not released updated figures on the number of people still missing. As of Sunday, around 80 people were believed to be unaccounted for.

Rescue teams are operating with caution due to unstable ground and ongoing poor weather conditions, which raise the risk of further landslides. “Our biggest concern is the possibility of additional landslides. During rescue operations, it is difficult to constantly monitor slopes that remain vulnerable,” said rescuer Rifaldi Ashabi.

According to Yudhi Bramantyo, operations director at the National Search and Rescue Agency, thousands of personnel have been deployed. Teams are using both manual digging and heavy machinery in their search for survivors and victims.
