There are rising fears that another Middle East conflict could break out if the nuclear talks between Iran and the US, which took place in Oman on Friday, fail. However, Iran’s foreign minister has stated that the talks have been productive so far and would continue.
The start of the negotiations was positive. As for the continuation of the discussions, there is an agreement. The minister, Abbas Araqchi, told Iranian state TV that decisions about coordination will be made in the capitals. “If this process continues, I think we will reach a good framework for an understanding.”
According to Araqchi, officials from both sides would be returning to their home countries for deliberations after engaging in indirect talks through Omani mediation in Muscat, the capital of Oman.
The United States and Iran have both expressed a desire to resume nuclear negotiations, but US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday that Washington hoped to broaden the scope of the talks to include Iran’s ballistic missile program, its backing of armed groups in the area, and the “treatment of their own people.”
According to Araqchi, who spoke to Iran’s official news agency IRNA, “any dialogue requires refraining from threats and pressure” and that Tehran just talks about the nuclear problem. With the United States, we do not broach any other topics.
