A Sri Lankan court has ordered that the remains of 84 sailors killed in an attack on an Iranian warship near the island nation’s coast be handed over to Iran’s embassy, local media reported on Wednesday.
The destroyer, IRIS Dena, was damaged by a torpedo from a US submarine while returning from a naval practice organized by India. This occurred during the US-Israeli assault on Iran, which has disrupted global markets, sent oil prices skyrocketing, and hindered trade and travel.
The court order was given on Wednesday after a plea by Galle Harbour Police in the southern port city of Galle, according to media sources. The bodies are lying in the morgue at Galle’s National Hospital.
Sri Lanka has given 30-day entrance permits to 208 crew members from a second Iranian vessel, who were hauled in due to engine problems in the same region, according to Deputy Defence Minister Aruna Jayasekera.
According to Jayasekara, the Sri Lankan foreign ministry has contacted the Iranian embassy in Colombo over the crew, and the mission is advising Tehran.
We expect a response from Tehran within the next several days,” he said.
