Prominent Emirati oncologist Prof. Humaid Alshamsi formally introduced his most recent book, Healthcare in the United Arab Emirates, at Abu Dhabi Global Health Week. The book offers a comprehensive examination of the healthcare system in the United Arab Emirates, encompassing its development, successes, and prospects for each of the seven emirates.
The event included an engaging fireside conversation with Dr George Mathew, affectionately known as ‘Matyous’, one of the first physicians to work in a public hospital in Al Ain and one of the pioneering physicians who came in Abu Dhabi over fifty years ago, and Prof. Dr Humaid Al Shamsi, CEO of Burjeel Cancer Institute.
In addition to receiving the esteemed Abu Dhabi Award, Dr. Mathew was recently honoured with a capital road named after him. A prominent group of academics, professionals, policymakers, and healthcare leaders attended the conversation.
In addition to providing an interesting view into the research, inspiration, and teamwork that went into the book, it also sparked an insightful discussion on the direction of healthcare in the area. To recognise Dr. Mathew’s lasting contribution to the medical history of the United Arab Emirates, Prof. Dr. Humaid gave him the first copy of the book as a symbolic gesture.
