A Gold Mine Collapse in Colombia Killed at Least 14 People

A gold mine in Colombia’s Nariño province collapsed on Monday, killing at least 14 miners, according to regional authorities. Nariño’s government reported that seven more individuals were injured in a mining disaster near Santa Barbara de Iscuande. Search attempts stopped Monday night. This emergency once again emphasizes the dangers of informal mining,” the statement read. In less than three months, two collapsed mines in Nariño have killed 27 people.

Aid workers struggle to reach Santa Barbara de Iscuande, which is surrounded by impenetrable rainforest and only accessible by boat or small plane. This tragic accident claimed the lives of entire families. Nariño Governor Luis Alfonso Escobar expressed sadness at the situation. Hundreds of tiny mines in Colombia operate without government approval, and some are run by rebel organisations. In addition to being difficult to access, Santa Barbara de Iscuande also faces security issues.

Two rebel factions are said to operate in the area, including the Jacobo Arenas Block, which is commanded by former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) members who refused to sign a 2016 peace agreement with Colombia’s government. Colombia’s Ombudsman’s Office issued a statement urging armed factions in the area to let humanitarian aid into the little town.
