At a news conference in Halifax, Sullivan added, “The Biden administration is in consistent communication with Israel regarding the current Hezbollah situation.”
A US official said that a round of high-level negotiations in Cairo that aimed to bring about a cease-fire and hostage agreement to at least temporarily end the 10-month Israel-Hamas war in Gaza ended on Sunday without reaching a definitive agreement. However, in the upcoming days, discussions will continue at a lower level in an attempt to close any remaining gaps.
David Barnea, the head of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, and William Burns, the director of the CIA, participated in the discussions. While Egyptian and Qatari mediators briefed a Hamas delegation, the delegation did not participate in direct negotiations.
The development followed heavy fire exchanged early on Sunday between Israel and Hezbollah, a Lebanese group, but both sides refrained from starting an all-out war, signalling that their most intense exchange in months was over.
Hezbollah claimed to have launched hundreds of rockets and drones at an Israeli military intelligence site close to Tel Aviv, while Israel asserted that its dozens of strikes were preventative measures to stop a more extensive attack. Neither provided proof.
