According to officials on Monday, separatist militants attacked police stations, railway lines, and highways in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, killing at least 73 people before security forces launched retaliatory operations. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi declared in a statement that “these attacks are a well-thought-out plan to create anarchy in Pakistan,” and that 12 militants had been killed by security forces in operations that followed the attacks on Sunday and Monday.
The largest attack targeted buses and goods trucks on a major highway; the Pakistani military said that after the attack, 14 soldiers and policemen and 21 militants were killed in fighting. Whether that included the 12 militants the interior ministry confirmed were dead was not immediately clear. At least 23 people were killed in the largest attack, which authorities confirmed targeted buses and goods trucks on a major highway. Ten of the vehicles were set on fire.
According to railways official Muhammad Kashif, militant attacks also destroyed a railway bridge that connected Quetta, the provincial capital, to the rest of the nation and a rail line that connected Pakistan and Iran. He continued, “Rail traffic with Quetta was suspended.” According to officials, militants attacked police and security stations in the vast province at the same time, with one attack resulting in the deaths of at least ten people.
