Following Washington’s pledge to launch a broad campaign against the International Criminal Court (ICC), the European Union denounced threats against the court on Tuesday. According to EU spokesperson Anouar El Anouni, “attacks or threats against court-elected officials, personnel, or those cooperating with the court are simply not acceptable. These remarks follow the commencement of a broad campaign by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to weaken the ICC, which may include additional sanctions and other measures.
Rubio declared that the court constituted “an intolerable threat to US sovereignty” and pledged to “dismantle” it in a video that was uploaded on X and a long opinion piece published in the Wall Street Journal.”The ICC, according to Rubio, “threatens every aspect of our political and legal system,” and it is no longer a “narrow backstop” tasked with trying “only the gravest offenses when a nation’s courts were unable.”
The operation will “systematically disable the ICC’s ability to operate, target American servicemen or officials, or otherwise threaten American sovereignty,” according to a statement from the State Department. The court “claims the authority to prosecute and even imprison American servicemen and officials operating on behalf of America’s national interest,” according to the statement.
